I love to adventure and explore nature. Joining the drifting community this year has been one of the best decisions I have made so far . I now opt to drive all energy to drifting during my leisure time.
I had never heard of Nachu caves before, but owing to my interaction with the drifting community, I was able to get familiarised.Initially I had only visited some caves in Menengai forest located in Nakuru. Caves give you a serene environment comparable to that of a house which leaves you feeling very relaxed as they are formed in a way that encloses a very large space where humans can enter. I was very eager to explore Nachu caves.
On the day of visiting Nachu caves, my drift-mates and I departed to Kikuyu town . Our first stop over was the Craves kitchen and Bakery. It is a very beautiful restaurant, anyone would find really appealing and lovable to those who will grace it with their presence. The place had an amazing and beautiful scenery. The art and pictures mounted on the walls was very fascinating. I couldn’t stop staring around me the entire time I was in there. The flower arrangement was spectacular and marvellous to look at. Unbelievably, the place had also a pile of interesting books shelved nicely, giving avid readers of various topics a gateway to curb boredom. As the old adage goes, knowledge is power. They had a wide range of awesome dishes at an affordable prices.
Nachu caves is located within Gatune Hills,a distance of about 6km from Lusegetti town. It is a 30 minute drive from Kikuyu town .The area is covered with both indigenous and exotic species of trees, different types of shrubs and thickets which have an intruiging aesthetic appeal. The area is also very rocky, the soil is very loose and people around here herd animals such as cows and goats. The area is prone to extreme high soil erosion because of the soil definition and thus, gabions have been set aside to mitigate erosion. The settlement here is scattered not many people live around the area close to the caves. There is also a seasonal dam around which serves as a drinking water point for the animals. Those are some of the landmarks seen while walking around the area before the actual rock climbing begins.
As we approached the cave it began to be tough, the terrain got steeper . As a result , climbing the rocks was somehow challenging. The trail vegetation was also covered in prickly vegetation . Breathing heavily and sweating profusely became the order of the day as the weather was hot that day. The terrain got even more perilious and I thanked my earlier stroke of wisdom in doning hiking boots making the hike comfortable. Light clothing in the hot weather also helped . A lot of water is needed during the hike to cool down the heat as the hot temperature can cause dehydration.
We finally reached the hidden treasure which was the final destination . The cave was roughly oblong and looked monstrously ancient.I climbed up and got to sit on top of the cave. It was breath-taking and captivating to see the beautiful view surrounding the cave . I was able to catch a glimpse of the Ngong hills and Suswa.Inside the cave was total darkness .At some point I almost lost my footing trying to pose for stunning pictures at the entrance of the cave. Girls will be girls after all.
After resting for a while and having something to eat, we climbed down to the second cave. I would literally describe it as self-contained, fascinating and spacious. It could be rather a home if there were humans living inside it. Climbing down the caves was strainous because of the steepiness, you could easily fall if you didn’t be careful and watching your step. At one point I did loose my footing but i journeyed on with my hike .
We spotted an ideal dazzling rock on our way down hill and we sat there waiting to see the beautiful view of the sunset but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be .It was amazing doing the rock climbing but with good company of the drifters they made it better and more fulfilling experience .
“Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter.”
